As we say goodbye to 2024, The Hepatitis Fund is reflecting on the incredible progress we’ve made — progress that wouldn’t be possible without your support.
From launching new multi-year funding opportunities for Asian and African organisations to signing several new agreements with international partners, The Hepatitis Fund has been busy driving collaboration and strengthening global efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis as a threat to public health.
As always, we remain committed to achieving a world where no child is born with viral hepatitis and where people living with hepatitis have access to equitable treatment and care – no matter where they are. Your support has made it possible for us to continue advancing this critical work, bringing us closer to a world free from viral hepatitis.
From all of us at The Hepatitis Fund, thank you!
Some of our project highlights
Pioneering innovative approaches to tackle hepatitis B, HIV, and syphilis among pregnant women in Vietnam
Each year, over 180,000 newborn babies in the Asia-Pacific region are newly infected by hepatitis B through mother-to-child transmission.
The Hepatitis Fund, PATH, and the City of Geneva recently partnered on an innovative approach to dealing with hepatitis B, HIV, and syphilis in Vietnam. Launched in late 2021, the 3-year project continues to demonstrate that early screening and treatment for pregnant women can effectively prevent mother-to-child transmission while offering scalable and cost-efficient solutions that work for local communities. Preventing mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B in Rwanda
In Rwanda, roughly 10,000 newborns are at risk of being exposed to hepatitis B at birth every year. To address this, The Hepatitis Fund, CHAI, and the Canton of Geneva co-funded a project to scale up hepatitis B screening, diagnosis, and antiviral treatment among pregnant women in Rwanda.
In 2024, the participating healthcare centres have provided hepatitis B screening, vaccination, and/or antiviral treatment to over 90% of mothers, newborns, and people living with hepatitis B seeking care. The project is on track to screen over 240,000 pregnant women and drastically improve vaccine coverage for newborns. Learn more
On the road to eliminating viral hepatitis across Asia-Pacific
In 2024, The Hepatitis Fund participated in numerous high-level meetings across the Asia-Pacific region, working with policymakers, experts, and community organisations to prioritise efforts to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat in the region.
Such meetings included the first Summit of the APAC Liver Disease Alliance in Bangkok, Thailand, the WHO’s National Programme Manager’s Meeting for Strengthening implementation of integrated service delivery to end AIDS, viral hepatitis and STIs in the South-East Asia Region, Bangkok, Thailand, and several other high-level meetings held in Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Philippines, Singapore, and more.
Partnering with the Muslim World League to reduce the burden of hepatitis in Africa
Even though a hepatitis B vaccine, testing and effective treatment are available, access to these life-saving interventions across Africa remains limited due to a lack of resources and political will.
In August, The Hepatitis Fund met with the Muslim World League to explore solutions to significantly reduce the burden of viral hepatitis in Africa. It signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future hepatitis projects in Somalia, Kenya, and other countries.
